Exponents

Notes

Key points

  • Same base: multiply → add exponents; divide → subtract; power of a power → multiply.
  • Negative exponent = reciprocal; x0=1x^0=1.
  • Fractional exponent: denominator is the root, x3/2=(x)3x^{3/2}=\left(\sqrt{x}\right)^3.
  • Rewrite to a common base: 8x=23x8^x=2^{3x}, then set exponents equal.
  • Growth/decay a(1±r)ta(1\pm r)^t: aa = start, 1±r1\pm r = factor per period.
  • Factor 1.061.06 = 6% growth; 0.940.94 = 6% decay.
  • Doubles every 3 years → 2t/32^{t/3}, with tt in years.

Formulas

Product and quotientxa⋅xb=xa+bxaxb=xa−bx^a\cdot x^b=x^{a+b}\qquad\dfrac{x^a}{x^b}=x^{a-b}
Power rules(xa)b=xab(xy)a=xaya(x^a)^b=x^{ab}\qquad(xy)^a=x^ay^a
Negative exponentx−a=1xax^{-a}=\dfrac{1}{x^a}
Fractional exponentxm/n=xmn=(xn)mx^{m/n}=\sqrt[n]{x^m}=\left(\sqrt[n]{x}\right)^m

Common traps

  • Distributing a power over a sum: (x+y)2≠x2+y2(x+y)^2\neq x^2+y^2.
  • Reading factor 0.850.85 as 85% decay — it's 15% decay.
  • Monthly rate, tt in years: exponent is 12t12t, not tt.

SAT tip

Match an exponential model by checking two things: the value at t = 0 and the factor per time unit.
