Percentages

Notes

Key points

  • Percent = partwhole×100\tfrac{\text{part}}{\text{whole}}\times100.
  • Increase by p%p\% → multiply by 1+p1001+\tfrac{p}{100}; decrease → 1−p1001-\tfrac{p}{100}.
  • Successive changes multiply: +20% then −20% gives 0.96, a 4% loss.
  • Percent change divides by the original, never the new value.
  • Reverse: original = new ÷ multiplier.
  • “p%p\% of q%q\% of xx” = p100⋅q100⋅x\tfrac{p}{100}\cdot\tfrac{q}{100}\cdot x.

Common traps

  • Adding successive percents: +10% then +10% is +21%, not +20%.
  • Finding the original by subtracting the percent from the new value.
  • Dividing by the new value in a percent-change question.

SAT tip

Turn every percent into a multiplier (×1.15, ×0.85) and chain them in one line.
