Graphing Basics

Notes

Key points

  • Point (x,y)(x,y): across first, then up or down.
  • Quadrants I–IV run anticlockwise from top right: (+,+), (−,+), (−,−), (+,−).
  • x-intercept: set y=0y=0. y-intercept: set x=0x=0.
  • On the x-axis: (a,0)(a,0). On the y-axis: (0,b)(0,b).
  • A point is on a graph only if its coordinates satisfy the equation.
  • Read the scale on both axes before reading any point.

Formulas

x-intercepty=0 ⇒ (a, 0)y=0\ \Rightarrow\ (a,\ 0)
y-interceptx=0 ⇒ (0, b)x=0\ \Rightarrow\ (0,\ b)
Intercepts of Ax + By = C(CA, 0)(0, CB)\left(\dfrac{C}{A},\ 0\right)\quad\left(0,\ \dfrac{C}{B}\right)
Horizontal and vertical linesy=k (horizontal)x=h (vertical)y=k\ \text{(horizontal)}\qquad x=h\ \text{(vertical)}

Common traps

  • Swapping coordinates: (2,5)(2,5) is 2 right, 5 up — not 5 right.
  • Treating x=3x=3 as a point. It is a vertical line.
  • Assuming each gridline is 1 unit; scales of 2, 5 or 10 are common.

SAT tip

To test a point, substitute it into the equation. Or plot both in Desmos and see if they touch.
